Coronary angiography and heart examination
Coronary angiography is a computed tomography method for determining the state of the heart (coronary) vessels. This method makes it possible to assess the risk of heart disease and obtain information about the heart cavities, heart walls - myocardium, heart valves, pericardium and prominent blood vessels of the heart. The examination is performed using a contrast agent.
Computed tomography can also examine the left atrium and pulmonary veins (CT heart examination).

Patient preparation for CT coronary angiography or heart examination
- Do not eat for at least 6 hours before the examination. It is allowed to take prescribed medications and drink water.
- Drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea, coca-cola, green tea, etc.) should be avoided for at least 12 hours before the examination.
- Metformin should be discontinued on the day of the examination and for two days after the examination. For this time, consult your endocrinologist or family doctor about replacement therapy.
- Patients with bronchial asthma are advised to use corticosteroids on the examination day to reduce the risk of a possible allergic reaction.
- There should be a controlled, stable heart rhythm with a rate below 65 beats per minute. Therefore, beta-blockers (Metoprolol, Bisoprolol, Nebivolol, etc.) should be taken in the morning. If the heart rate remains above 65 beats per minute on the previous days and the morning of the examination, you should take a higher dose of regular beta-blockers on the morning of the examination, coordinating the amount with your cardiologist or family doctor.
- Cardiac deceleration is unnecessary if the CT scan is performed on the left atrium and pulmonary veins.
